Polished Diamonds For The Retail Jeweller

Due to numerous requests, the EGL College of Gemology developed a 2 day diamond course specifically designed for the retail jeweller and more importantly for the training of their retail sales staff.

       

       

1. Course Objective

       

To give the student a comprehensive background and knowledge of diamonds and diamond grading from the formation through to the pricing of the polished gem.

       

       

2. Course Outline

       

To save lecture time and to give the student time to assimilate the course material, the course manual is sent to the student seven days prior to course commencement. The course consists of the sections found under point no 5.

       

       

3. Course Design

       

The course is of two day duration and modular in design, which gives the retail jeweller the opportunity to choose which modules he requires emphasis on during the training of his staff.

       

4. Course Fee

       

Johannesburg : 2 Days  R3 990 inc VAT

       

Other Venues:   2 Days *R4 663 inc VAT

       

*Plus courier costs of course material where applicable.

       

A discount for group training of more than 5 students may be negotiated.

 

 

5. Suggested Course Structure for the two day retail Course

Day 1

  1. Questionnaire for students to assess whether they have read the course material and absorbed its contents.
  2. Revision of questionnaire.
  3. Lecture using overheads on formation, physical properties, cutting and shapes of diamonds.
  4. The 4 "Cs" and facets of brilliant cut diamonds.
  5. Practical handling of diamonds; practicing using a loupe and tweezers confidently.
  6. The importance of plotting a diamond.
  7. Practical microscope work and clarity grading.
  8. Practical colour grading.

Day 2

  1. Why proportions of a diamond are important and how they are calculated.
  2. Importance of the diamond finish and symmetry.
  3. How to estimate the weight of a diamond.
  4. The differences between a diamond and the common simulants, and how to recognize them.
  5. Fracture filling and enhancement of diamonds.
  6. How to read a laboratory consultation and certificate.
  7. Revision and final questionnaire for assessment of the student's ability to handle diamonds and communicate effectively.
